Pole Barns and Barndominiums
Colorado Pole Barns, Shops, and Barndominium Construction
At True North Construction Company, we build pole barns, shops, equipment storage, and barndominiums throughout Fremont, Custer, Teller, El Paso, and Pueblo counties. Whether you need a straightforward shop to get your equipment out of the weather or a full barndominium to live in, we build structures that hold up to Colorado conditions.
A post-frame building goes up faster and spans wider than conventional framing, which makes it the right answer for shops, storage, and open-plan living. It is not, however, the budget shortcut a lot of people arrive expecting, and we would rather have that conversation with you before you buy land than after.
We are seeing more and more buyers moving here from Texas, Arkansas, and the Southeast who have priced a barndominium based on what one costs back home. Colorado building code, snow load engineering, frost depth, and energy code requirements change those numbers substantially. We will walk you through what actually drives the cost here so you can plan against real figures.
From site work and foundations through framing, insulation, and finish, we handle the build. We are licensed and insured, and we pull the permits your county requires.

Pole Barns and Shops
Post-frame shops and barns sized to your equipment and your property. Wide clear spans, tall doors, and the option to insulate and heat the space now or leave it ready to finish later.
Barndominiums
Full-time residences built on a post-frame or steel shell, combining living space with attached shop or storage. We handle the complete build, including the residential code requirements that a shop alone would not trigger.
Equipment and RV Storage
Covered and enclosed storage for tractors, trailers, RVs, and equipment. We size door heights and clear spans around what you actually need to park inside, not around a standard kit.
Garages and Workshops
Detached garages and workshops built to match the house or built purely for function. Insulation, electrical, and heating can be included in the build or roughed in for later.
Post-Frame and Barndominium Framing
Our framing crew handles post-frame structures, engineered trusses, and the connection details that carry snow and wind load. Precise framing is what keeps doors square and roofs tight ten years down the road.
Site Work and Foundations
Grading, drainage, piers, and slabs engineered for your soil and frost depth. Site preparation is where barndominium budgets most often go sideways, so we assess it before we quote rather than after.
Colorado Barndominium Questions
What Post-Frame Construction Really Takes in Colorado
Barndominiums are the single most common project we get asked about by out-of-state buyers, and the single most common one where expectations and Colorado reality do not line up. We would rather give you accurate information early than take a deposit and disappoint you later.
Why Colorado Barndominiums Cost More Than You Expect
If you have researched barndominiums online, most of what you found was written about Texas, Oklahoma, or the Southeast. Those numbers do not transfer. Here is what changes when you build in our counties.
Snow load engineering
Roof snow loads in our service area are dramatically higher than in the southern states where the barndominium trend started. That means heavier trusses, tighter post spacing, and often a stamped engineering review. The structure above your head is simply more building than the same square footage would be in Texas.
Frost depth and foundations
Footings here go well below the frost line, and much of our regional soil requires engineered piers or a thickened slab. Site work and foundation often account for a larger share of the budget than people anticipate, particularly on sloped or rocky lots.
Energy code
A barndominium that someone lives in is a residence, and it has to meet residential energy code. That means real insulation values in the walls and roof, proper air sealing, and rated windows. A bare metal shell is a shop, not a home, and the gap between the two is significant.
Water, septic, and power
If your property is not already served, a well and septic system are substantial separate costs with their own permitting timelines. Running power to a remote parcel can be another significant line item. None of these show up in the kit price you found online.
Permitting varies by county
Fremont, Custer, Teller, El Paso, and Pueblo counties each have their own requirements, review timelines, and inspection schedules. We work in all of them and we will tell you what to expect for your specific parcel.
Common Questions About Pole Barns and Barndominiums
Can I live in a pole barn?
You can live in a post-frame building, but it has to be permitted and built as a residence from the start. Building a shop and converting it later is almost always more expensive and more complicated than building it right the first time, and in some jurisdictions it is not permitted at all.
How long does a barndominium take to build?
Plan on a timeline comparable to a custom home. The shell goes up quickly, which is the part people see in videos, but the site work before it and the interior finish after it take the same time they would in any house.
Will a bank finance a barndominium?
Many lenders will, but financing post-frame residences can be more involved than financing conventional construction, and appraisals can be harder to support where there are few comparable sales. We recommend talking to a lender early so financing does not become the surprise that stalls your project.
Do you build from a kit?
We can build from a kit you have purchased, and we can also design and build from scratch. Before you buy a kit, let us look at it. Many kits sold online are not engineered for our snow loads and will need modification, which erases much of the savings that made the kit attractive.
