Decks and Outdoor Living
Colorado Deck Builder and Outdoor Living Spaces
At True North Construction Company, we build decks, covered porches, and outdoor living spaces designed for the way Coloradans actually live outside. Our season is short and our weather is hard on everything, so an outdoor space here has to be built differently than one in Texas or Arizona.
We serve homeowners throughout Fremont, Custer, Teller, El Paso, and Pueblo counties, and we build for the conditions those counties hand us: heavy snow loads, intense high-altitude sun, hard freeze-thaw cycles, and wind. Material selection and framing details that work at sea level will cup, split, and fail here within a few seasons.
Every deck we build starts with the structure. Footings go below frost depth, ledger connections are flashed and fastened to code, and elevated decks are engineered for the snow load your county requires. The finishes are what you see, but the framing underneath is what determines whether the deck is still solid in twenty years.
We are licensed and insured, and we pull the permits your county requires so the work is inspected and documented. That matters when you sell the house.
Whether you want a simple ground-level deck off the back door or a covered outdoor room with a fireplace, contact us today for a project estimate and let us help you get more out of your property.
Decks
Ground-level, raised, and multi-level decks built from pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or composite. We help you weigh up-front cost against long-term maintenance so you pick the material that fits how you actually want to spend your weekends.
Covered Decks and Porches
A roof over your outdoor space extends the season by months and protects the deck itself from snow and sun. We build covered decks and porches that tie into your existing roofline so they look original to the house rather than bolted on.
Pergolas and Shade Structures
Pergolas, shade sails, and louvered covers give you relief from the high-altitude sun without closing the space in. We engineer them for wind and snow, which is where most prefabricated kits fall short in Colorado.
Outdoor Fire Features
Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and chimneys built to local fire code and sited for safe clearances. We handle gas line runs and the masonry, and we will tell you honestly what your county allows before you fall in love with a design.
Patios and Hardscape
Concrete, paver, and flagstone patios with proper base preparation and drainage. Most patio failures in our area trace back to inadequate base or water running the wrong direction, and both are preventable on day one.
Deck Repair and Replacement
If your deck is sagging, the boards are splitting, or you are not sure the ledger was ever flashed, we will inspect it and give you a straight answer on whether it needs repair or replacement. Failed ledger connections are the most common serious defect we find.
Colorado Outdoor Living Questions
Decks, Patios, and Porches Built for Our Climate
An outdoor living space is one of the few home improvements that pays you back every single day you are home. It is also one of the easiest projects to get wrong, because the parts that fail are the parts nobody sees.
Below are the questions we get asked most often about decks and outdoor spaces in our part of Colorado.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Colorado?
In most cases, yes. Requirements vary by county and municipality, but decks above a certain height, decks attached to the house, and any structure with a roof almost always require a permit and inspection. We handle the permit process as part of the project and build to the code your jurisdiction enforces.
What does a deck cost?
Cost depends on size, height, material, and whether the deck is covered. A simple ground-level pressure-treated deck sits at the low end. A raised composite deck with a roof, lighting, and a fire feature sits at the high end and is closer to a small addition than a deck. We give you a written estimate with the scope spelled out so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Should I use wood or composite?
Wood costs less up front and needs to be cleaned and sealed regularly to survive our sun and freeze-thaw cycles. Composite costs more up front and needs almost nothing after installation. If you enjoy the maintenance, wood is a fine choice. If you do not, composite usually wins over a ten to fifteen year horizon.
Can you build a deck on a steep or uneven lot?
Yes. A good portion of the lots in Fremont, Custer, and Teller counties are anything but flat, and elevated decks on sloped terrain are routine work for us. Steep sites require deeper footings, engineered beams, and sometimes a structural review, all of which we handle.
How long does a deck take to build?
Once permits are issued, a straightforward deck typically takes one to two weeks. Covered decks and projects with masonry or electrical work take longer. Weather is the variable we cannot control, and we will be upfront with you about the schedule rather than promising a date we cannot hold.
