Do I need a permit to build a deck in Colorado?
Usually, yes. Most Colorado counties follow the International Residential Code. Under that code, a deck needs a permit if any of these is true:
- It is attached to the house
- It sits more than 30 inches above the ground
- It is larger than 200 square feet
Counties add their own rules on top of that, including snow load requirements that change with elevation. We pull the permits for every deck we build, so the paperwork isn't on you.
